Glaucoma is a group of diseases caused by a deficiency in the drainage of aqueous humor, the liquid constantly produced and drained from the eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure and progressive damage to the optic nerve fibers.

Does glaucoma have a cure?

Unfortunately, glaucoma cannot be cured, but the disease can be controlled with treatments that help maintain intraocular pressure at safe levels and prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Ongoing follow-up with an ophthalmologist is essential to minimize the risk of vision loss.

Diagnosis

Advanced cases are easily detected during the first consultation. In early cases, the ophthalmologist may detect suspicious signs of the disease, such as increased intraocular pressure or optic nerve cupping. Glaucoma is confirmed through complementary exams. In moderate and advanced cases, these exams typically show typical changes from the first evaluation. However, as glaucoma often progresses slowly, it is common in very early cases not to have a confirmation in the first exams, which may take months or years of monitoring before signs of the disease appear.
